Kalooki 51 Rummy Rules – Important Notes

First thing – don’t forget those Joker cards! We aren’t referring to the eccentric gin players next door; we mean the Jokers in the deck. Kalooki 51 Rummy rules specify that Jokers serve as wild cards, which can greatly sway the game in your favor. (More on the importance of Jokers later on.)   Second thing – you’ll need two complete decks of cards (54 cards each) instead of one deck of 52. This means you’ll have four of those treasured Jokers to vie for.  Every player is dealt 13 cards, and each player takes a turn. After the cards are dealt, all remaining cards are placed face down on the table, becoming the stock pile. The top card is turned face up which starts the discard pile. The player to the left of the dealer begins by drawing a card.

Kalooki 51 Rummy Rules – Objective of Play

The objective of Kalooki 51 is to be the first player to get rid of your entire hand. This happens when players create and lay down “melds” of runs (three or more cards in a row of the same suit) or sets (three or four cards sharing the same face value). You’ll need to dust off the calculator, because Kalooki 51 Rummy Rules specify that an initial meld must have a value of 51 or higher in order to be declared and placed down, hence the name of the game. And unlike Gin Rummy, the Ace is valued at 11, and the Joker takes the value of whatever card the player wants it to represent.

Kalooki 51 Rummy Rules – Joker Value

The Joker affects play first by serving as a wild card, taking any value the player chooses. Secondly, they can be reused or claimed. If the Joker is used in a set of three (such as 5 of clubs and 5 of spades), a player can take the Joker if they exchange it for 5 of hearts and 5 of diamonds. However to “seal” or “close” a set, the player needs the Joker and 3 cards of equal value (such as 5 of clubs, 5 of spades, and 5 of diamonds).  If the Joker is used in a run, any player has the option to claim it by simply replacing (installing) the card with the face value that the Joker is representing. Also the player who holds the real card that the wild-card Joker represents can use it to replace the Joker, and reuse it elsewhere.

The only melds that can be rearranged are those containing a Joker. Sets and runs, of course, can be added on to at any time. But beware holding the Joker if your opponent should win; if this card remains in your hand, it’ll cost you 25 penalty points!

Kalooki 51 Rummy Rules – Winning the Game

“Going out” to win and “Going Kalooki” to win are scored somewhat differently in Kalooki 51. If the inner “Goes Out,” the other players add up the sum of all the remaining cards in their hands, using 25 points for Jokers and 11 points for Aces. If the winner “Goes Kalooki,” the other players must add an additional 25 penalty points to those same card values.
