Hands are made by using melds and by getting rid of "deadwood" from the hand. Melds can be sets of cards ranging in number from three to four cards of suits that are alike, such as three of hearts, three of clubs, three of spades and three of diamonds. Similarly, there can be three cards that are in the same suit and in sequence, as an example: three of diamonds, four of diamonds, and five of diamonds. Cards in the hand that do not fit into a meld are called deadwood. Although this might sound a bit tricky – don't fear; most people pick the game of gin rummy up fairly fast. Gin Rummy Rules: Scoring
Scoring in gin rummy is simple. Gin rummy rules state that aces count as one point, and the remaining numbered cards are valued at the number that they represent. For example: the nine card is valued at nine points. All face cards (Jack, Queen, and King) are valued at ten points. For runs or melds of three cards that bear the same number, the card can only be counted once. Cards that are considered deadwood are counted as the total of the point values that they represent. Players may end the game by melding with cards that are unmatched but that add up to ten points of less.

The object of the game is to get a "gin", which happens when all of the cards in a player's hand are matched up. The winner of gin rummy, according to gin rummy rules, is the player that gets to 100 points first.
Gin Rummy Rules: Dealing
When determining who deals first when playing gin rummy, gin rummy rules specify that the deck is cut and the lowest card deals. The deal begins by the dealer dealing out ten cards to each gin rummy player. Card number 21 is dealt upwards and is called the "wand" card. The remaining cards in the deck are dealt out in a facing down position. The first player has the option to take the first card that is facing up; if he or she does not take the first card, the dealer may choose to. Play begins when the first card from the stockpile of gin rummy cards is taken.
Gin Rummy Rules: Playing the Game
Each player, during their turn clockwise around the gin rummy table, will take a card from the top of the stockpile or from the top of the discard pile. Each player will also discard a card to finish up his or her turn. The gin rummy game will continue in this fashion until one of two things happens: a player knocks (which means he or she has ten or fewer points in deadwood cards) or the stockpile has been depleted to the point where only two cards remain. When a player has zero deadwood points, they have gone "gin".
Gin Rummy Online Rules to Remember
- Counting knock points. To determine the number of "knock points" that a player gets when knocking, take the number of points in the knocking player's hand and subtract it from the remaining players' point values. For example, if a player knocks with 8, and the other player has 12 deadwood points, then the player who knocked will get a total of four points for that gin rummy hand, according to gin rummy rules.
- Points for going Gin. Gin rummy rules specify that when a player goes gin, they get twenty-five bonus points in addition to the points for the deadwood cards in the other player's hands.
