It’s all in the cards. Be alert and aware of the cards in your hand and those cards that your opponent has tossed into the discard pile. Remember that the game is played with only a single 52-card deck, and this leaves only so many possibilities for card combinations. It’s also a good Gin Rummy strategy to draw cards from the stockpile rather than from the discard pile, as the latter can reveal tips to your opponent about which cards you need in your hand to complete your melds. Drawing from the stockpile also adds to the potential of preventing your opponent from completing their meld. Since your opponent has already tossed those cards they no longer want, your drawing from the stockpile may take away exactly the card that they needed.

Knock early, knock often. While the game is in its earlier rounds, if your cards have aligned and you have the chance to knock, this is a great Gin Rummy strategy. Keeping your hand sorted and separated into sets, melds, and deadwood will help keep your eye on the running deadwood total, so that you can knock the moment your deadwood total drops below the magic knock number. The longer the game is played, the less effective this strategy becomes, as your opponent will have had more time to discard their deadwood and form stronger melds.
Gin Rummy Strategy: Consider the Setup
Go for the setup. When your hand allows the choice between making a meld of a four-card set or of a consecutive run, the best Gin Rummy strategy is to go for the four-card set. When this round ends and your opponent is looking for a free meld to add their layoff deadwood, your four-card set will be off limits. You may not be lucky enough to have this choice right away in your hand, but this thought process can help you decide which cards to keep and which to toss through each consecutive turn.
Gin Rummy Strategy: Counting the Costs
Count the cost. As the game progresses, players should be considering the cost of the deadwood in their hand. As the chances for being caught with deadwood increase with each progressing turn, the point value of the discarded cards increase. Then if your opponent knocks or goes Gin before you do, the cost of your deadwood will hopefully be rather small.

And don’t forget! The very best Gin Rummy strategy is a superior memory (a photographic memory here would prove to be an extreme advantage!). But for the rest of us with average memories, recalling what your opponent has thrown away and comparing it to what is (or what could be) in your hand may be just the trick to turning a game to your favor.
