Rummy Setup And Deal
Online rummy is played with two to four players and utilizes a standard 52 card deck. Play begins with each player being deal ten cards face down. Each player is dealt one card at a time until they have ten. The remaining cards are placed in a pile face down in the middle of the table and are called the stock. One card is then placed face up in a discard pile.

The object in rummy is to construct melds and eventually have no cards remaining in your hand. Melds are either sets or runs with a set being three or four cards of the same rank and a run being three or more cards of the same suit and in order. Each turn a player must pick up one card from either the stock pile or the discard pile in hopes of improving their hand. Next the player has an opportunity to lay out any melds, note however that this is not required and that a player may only lay one meld per turn. Once the player has placed their melds they then are given the opportunity to lay off on any other melds currently in play. For example:
- 444 is currently on the board, a player may place an additional 4 as part of that meld.
- 3c4c5c6c is currently on the board, a player may place a 2c or a 7c to meld with the run.
- 6h7h8h9h is currently on the board, a player may play 99 to meld with the other nine of this run, creating a set.
Once again, like melding, laying off is optional. To conclude their turn that player must then put a card in the discard pile. Play then continues to the left. The game finishes when a player no longer has any cards. The player could have no cards through melding, laying off or simply from discarding. The game is immediately over once a player no longer has cards and the scoring begins.
Online Rummy Scoring
Once play has ended, players add up their respective scores in the following fashion:
- Number cards (2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10) are worth their actual value.
- Face cards (K,Q,J) are worth ten points.
- Aces are worth one point
- The cards remaining in other players hands are added to the player who was first to ran out of cards.
There are a variety of different ways to decide the ultimate winner in rummy. Usually there is a predetermined amount of points to acquire or a set amount of deals to be made before a winner is determined.
Gin Rummy Rules
The game play of gin rummy is identical to traditional rummy, but there are some different scoring rules and other variations in the game that give it a unique flavor. Gin rummy is also usually played by only two people. In gin rummy the goal of the game is slightly different. In gin rummy a player, at any time may do what is called “knocking”. If a player knocks, they immediately play all possible sets and runs in their hand. Any additional cards left over (called deadwood) must be under ten points total. If a player can play all their cards and has no deadwood, it is called “going gin” and it earns the player additional points. Once the knock has been made, the opposing player gets a chance to play all sets and runs from their hand plus they get a chance to lay off on their opponent’s melds. Note however, if the knocker gins, the opponent is not afforded the opportunity to lay off.
Gin Rummy Scoring
First the players score all of their unmatched cards according to traditional rummy scoring. If the knockers count is lower than the opponents, then the knocker scores the difference between the two scores. If however the knockers score is not lower or is equal with the opponents, then the knocker is said to be undercut and the opponent is awarded a ten point bonus plus the difference in scores. Lastly if the knocking player gins, they are awarded a twenty point bonus plus the value of all the opposing players’ unmatched cards. A player who gins cannot be undercut.
The game continues until one player reaches 100 points. A bonus of 20 points is then awarded for each hand won. Note that the player who reaches 100 points first is awarded an additional 100 points and if the opposing player never scored then the winning player is given a 200 point bonus! Keep in mind that various online rummy rooms may have target scoring set up or other scoring formats, make sure you are familiar with the scoring before starting a game.
