Great seven card stud players are also great gin rummy players and that is because they have a knack for memorizing the cards they see, both in their hand and on the board. You need to memorize the cards in your hand and the ones you discard as well as all the cards your opponents discard. You also need to memorize which cards your opponent picks up from the discard pile. Were they your cards or were they your opponent’s cards that he or she has come back for? All this information will provide you with a picture of what your opponent is trying to do.
In gin rummy it is important to evaluate your hand and decide if you can make a run at knocking or if you are going to try and defend to undercut the knocker. It should become pretty clear right away what type of hand you have and it is important that you stick to one path. If you change strategies midway through the hand you are likely to get stuck and end up with a horrible hand or one that simply doesn’t play well. There may also be situations where your hand simply is no good and in cases like this your strategy should obviously be to rid yourself of high ranking cards and try to maintain the lowest score possible for when your opponent inevitably knocks.
Just as in poker, you should be able to get a read on your opponent fairly quickly. Expert players will clearly be more difficult to get a read on, but ultimately you should be able to figure out what kind of player you are up against. Once you have a fix on your opponent you can then make some decisions on how you need to play. Some patterns that may develop are that your opponent always plays to knock and never sits in the weeds to undercut. You may also notice that your opponents always try to knock when they can gin. Both of these situations provide you with information you can use to adapt to your game. For example, with an aggressive player, try to take a more defensive approach by discarding cards that are of little help to your opponent but ultimately will reduce your score. Conversely, if a player rarely knocks, you can adapt a more aggressive strategy and try to catch them with a knock early before they have their defense set up. Memorization clearly will be a big help in any of these situations and is very important.
